Woke up this morning and went to go eat breakfast, but the door to the castle was locked, and no one else was around. So I thought that it would be easy to walk around the side of the cottage, but there is a large doorless fence and connected to that is a large
garden and connected to that is a 4 foot tall stone wall. So after scaling that and walking back to the front of the castle I finally got in through the front door so I could get my bowl of cereal. After breakfast Allison, Grace, and I saw the studio spaces at Hospitalfield. Susan is the artist in residence right now. She paints abstract landscapes, and was painting in Italy and Spain before coming to Scotland. We took chairs from the studio and camped out in front of Hospitalfield to sketch. When my fingers were almost completely numb we opted out in favor of a few cups of tea before lunch. For lunch, Rod made us zucchini and leek purée, biscuits with fresh mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes served with baguettes and hummus. After lunch we departed for a short trip to Dundee where we visted the Dundee Contemporary Arts. The building is right off of the river, and had a gallery, sweet gift shop and cafe, and also the most impressive prontmaking studio I have ever seen. This print studio is huge. There is a main room with tons of different presses. They have a huge laser cutter (25,000 pounds: 50,000 dollars) and a router. Their studio has a spray room for screens with a separate room for developing. There are screens there that are as big as a wall. They do not have letterpresses though. We walked to the University of Dundee to see their art dept. but it was all closed for construction. Then off to The McManus art gallery and museum, which was a pretty sweet place. They have the skelton of a whale there which made me think of Stephie D and Marissa G:) We drove back to Arbroath for dinner, which was the most delicious chicken curry over rice served with pita bread and then a gingerbread cake covered with apple cinnamon sauce and topped off with soft rhubarb and vanilla ice cream for dessert. It was so delicious, we all creamed our pants. After changing our pants, some went downtown again, but today I just felt like staying in and spending some quality time with the ladies and the castle. Now time to sleep.
