Hey hey hey.
Well, after a bit of a hectic evening after I wrote the last bloggy thingy (we may have all got locked in a church yard with a 4 metre high wall, failed to climb over the 3 metre high spikey gates (it was like something out of an opening scene in casualty) and then knocked on the door of the padre and asked him to let us, and several mexicans, out) Lizzie and I are now in our home for the next few months.
We missioned from Tula to Mexico City yesterday, and after saying goodbye to all the other volunteers who were getting buses here there and everywhere, we were picked up by Daniel from the YMCA or la GUYA in mexico city, and we went to visit the central building and offices.
They´re amazing! They have two swimming pools. loads of gyms and aerobics room thingies, an entire university attatched, etc. We went up to the offices and were introduced to the people who´d be looking after us that day and for the next few days, and got a tour of the building from Patty Jimenez. We met loads of people (who all looked a bit scary and important) but everyone was dead nice. Lots of kissing and shaking hands here in Mexico...
After the grand tour, during which we were give numerous freebees, we had dinner in a realy posh room. Lunch tends to be the main meal of the day here, it´s at about 2 or 3 o´clock, and you eats LOADS we thought we were going to die from over eating. The food is quite heavy, beans and tortillas and lots of meat, rice, bread etc, but the fruit is amazing. I think we had lemon juice (like nothing you´ve ever tasted before) and watermelon and pineapple with chilli on it.
After the meal, we were give a present, a hat and a t shirt from the ymca, and then we got in the minibus to go to tepoztlan.
The journey took about two hours, but fortunatley there weren´t quite as many speed bumps as there were in the centre of town.
Tepoztlan is a really beautiful place, a massive valley surrounded by loads of mountains, dead green, cobbled streets etc.
We went to visit the main town after we dropped our stuff off at the camp, and because it was the equivalent of pancake day, there was a huge party going on, beer in the street and a million market stalls selling everything you could ever need... ever.
The food that they make on the street either looks really good, or really skanky, but we´ve yet to risk it... maybe later this week!
This morning we had a grand tour of the camp and learnt all the jobs that we´re going to be doing over the next few days. We got the bus with the people who travelled down from the YMCA in the city, (quite an experience, picture a 60s campervan with a magical sliding door) and had a look at all the schools that we´re going to be teaching at.
Because today´s ash wednesday, the children, or ´becarios´ aren´t at the camp at the moment, but we´re going to meet them all tomorrow, which is slightly scary, but the canadian girls that have been here for the last 5 months said that once you get to know them all, they´re all adorable, and they´re really sad that they have to leave!
Argh! they keep setting of fireworks here, god knows why, it´s still really sunny.
So, we´re off to buy some chocolate I think and have a quick look round the town before we go back for dinner, so - hasta luego!
