We went on an amazing adventure today to the tip of the Ayre Peninsula to a place called the Whaler's Way. It's a privately owned piece of land alongside the Port Lincoln National Park that has been held in the same family for many generations. The area was once frequented by whaling ships - hence the name.
It was quite expensive to enter the land ($30 plus a refundable $10 key deposit) as you need to unlock the gate on your way in and out. The drive is through a remote dirt track, quite rocky and in bad condition in some parts. It's around 15km in length but as there are many stops along the way and incredible scenes at each stop, it takes at least half a day to see most sights along the way. There are no facilities at Whaler's Way other than some old picnic tables and a very rusted old bbq.
For us it was worth the expense as we can't visit the national parks because of Cadbury and we love exploring stunning coastlines.
Just before we got to the park we explored a couple of other stops along the way snd found some fantastic sand dunes just on the outskirts of the national park that we could enjoy (Gadi and Cadbury climbing up and me in photography heaven!).
Whaler's Way has to be one of the most stunning places we have seen, and some of the stops included high cliffs, caves, sink holes, natural swimming holes down steep cliffs, blow holes and powerful waves at every bend.
Most of the walks are very short which makes it quite accessible, despite the rocks and sand hills to climb. We kept bumping into two elderly couples in a small AWD Imprezza, who kept just ahead of us. They were on a short cruise from Adelaide, which had docked in Port Lincoln this morning and had hired the car to see Whaler's Way for the day.
The day felt like a long one with all the wind and fresh air we'd had. On the way back we had a couple of issues with the car, which is a worry, and we may need to check it out at the Ford Service we have booked for tomorrow morning before we leave the area.
We did a big shop in Coles in Port Lincoln and headed back to our little home around 7pm, laden with way too much shopping, as usual. Ate some store bought BBQ chicken for dinner before sorting out all our shopping.
Time to unwind for the evening - books, TV, chocolate and my blog. Plenty for me to do!
So from the far south of South Australis, good night xx
