I know it's been a while since my last blog, but now that I am getting settled in lovely Queenstown, I'll just update it once a week or so :)
So you already know I got a job! It's at a cafe called 'Bob's Weigh' and is a small shop with orange & yellow walls & five staff (that's including me). I've been hired as a casual, to fill in for the days others have off and when it gets busier, which will be happening in the next week or two! Everyone else is full time, and the owner works there as well. Well, last Tuesday was my first day there. It was a trial, but it pretty much meant I got the job anyway.
I started at 10am, which is a pretty good time, and it was fun! The staff were lovely & helpful! I mostly stayed out the back and did the dishes, but that was fine for me, I didn't want to be too overwhelmed with everything. I was only there for about an hour and a half, and when I finished, they insisted on feeding me! So I got an amazing sandwich, which was made on fresh pumpkin bread, and they snuck in a freshly cooked chocolate muffin as well. Goodbye diet! I'm also allowed free coffee any time I want, even if it's my days off!
They asked to me work again on Wednesday, where I met the owner, Bob. He is the craziest, happiest, coolest & funniest guy! He cracks jokes all day, and is so easy to talk to. I got given the lovely nickname of 'Clarebear' (girl's get nice nicknames, unlike the boys..) and that's all I get called there now. Which is good! My old boss, Marco, have me that nickname and I LOVE it! So it's fair to say I'm loving my new job, and will be happy there!
I worked Thursday as well, and asked to work Friday, but they didn't need me, as it was a slow day. This week I'm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday all with 7am starts! I'm also a bit sick at the moment, so those mornings are going to kill me!
While we are staying in Queenstown, we were looking for a house to live in. This wasn't the best idea, as we would have to sign a lease for 6 months and we don't want to stay that long! We eventually decided to see about working for accommodation here at Base, so we don't have to pay! I couldn't do a housekeeping job because of my hours at work, so Promo work would be more suited. The guy I had to see about it, Louie, saw me every night bugging him for a job! Poor guy. It paid off though, because I start tonight! All I do is go around to the rooms and hand out vouchers for the bar, go to other hostels and do the same, and help out with activities they do in the bar! I'm hoping it will be good and not too late either!
It was beautiful Kristy's birthday last week. If you don't know me, I LOVE birthdays! They are the one time a year and entire day is about you! I think I was more excited for her birthday then she was! I organised a dinner at the Irish pub down the road, and was going to pay for her meal. I knew she wouldn't let me pay for it, but if I got her a voucher, she had to use it! So that's what I did! I also got her a lovely card, and all us girls signed it, and last but not least, every birthday needs a cake! But I decided to do one better, and got fudge. Three different flavours for us all to share! It was a great night! I hope she liked it all! Kristy is a pretty amazing person, anyone who has met her will say so!
So now that all that is covered, I guess I'll update you with more next week! Oh, I haven't talked about my bungy jumping? If you haven't already gotten bored reading this blog, you can read a little more!
It was 8am when we had to get up. The sun wasn't even out yet, and neither were any right minded people. We got ready, and headed up to the bungy shop to check in at 8.50am. Kristy & I went into my work to get a coffee to wake us up, then met Emily across the road. We did what we had too, then for some unknown reason, sat outside, in the -2 degree weather waiting for the bus. Of course I'd forgotten my gloves, so my fingers froze pretty quick. My ears were worse though, I couldn't feel them! After a while we went back inside, and as Murphy's Law would have it, we didn't even get to warm up before we ushered outside to board the bus.
It wasn't a terribly long drive to the Bridge, and we could see hints of snow along the way. It was a freezing morning! We got to the Bungy place and checked in and got weighed. Even in my 4 layers of clothing & sneakers, I'd managed to lose a bit of weight. Happy Amy! I still didn't feel scared or nervous, even when we had to go outside to get into gear. There was frost and slate everywhere! And was still -2 degrees! I got ready and had to jump 3rd. This was the first ever bungy site in the world, and the smallest in New Zealand, being only 43m. I was fine still, until I got up and looked down.
That was a mistake! Almost instantly, I was petrified, and almost convinced myself I couldn't do. But I had to put my big girl pants on, and not back out! I had good intentions of doing a graceful swan dive, and jumping out as far as I could, but then the '3, 2, 1' came and I choked. I just sort of fell, and did a pencil jump, which I learnt i very bad. I was pretty much vertical, and so when I reached the bottom, and rope swung me upside down and I could hear every bone in my back crack! I'd say if you needed a chiropractor, do a pencil bungy and achieve the same results! No, I'm kidding. My back is a wee bit sore right now.
I honestly thought I'd get some sort of whiplash doing a bungy jump, but that didn't happen at all. And I'll admit, it was great fun! Scared me a bit for the Nevis, which is 134m, but I have to do it! I just won't look down..

Marcus Go Amy!! wahoo!!! good luck with the next jump!!! next time, wait inside :P
Jessica HAHA! have fun jumping off of the next one hahahaha... your job sounds AMAZING!! the 5 staff, does that include the bosses?
Heather Okay so now I know for sure that you're nuts. What would induce you to jump into nothingness???? Weird...... Your job sounds just excellent. And working for accommodation is the best idea you've had, I'd say. Renting a house would probably be very expensive as well. Keep on keeping on......and blogging, of course. I don't mind a day by day blog.....
