The morning started by waking at 7.15am. I always seem to wake up before my alarm, and it's never enough time to go back asleep! So I stayed in bed until 7.30am, trying to wake up a bit so I don't look so dead in the kitchen for breakfast. We got up and got ready, and I really didn't feel like food, so I just cut up some apples and bananas and put them in a container to eat on the bus. Our taxi arrived at 8.30am on the dot and he told us a lot about the city! He must have been a local for a long time.
We drove around most of the 'Red Zone' where he pointed out which buildings were being demolished and which weren't. Most of them were though. He showed us the TV building that caused the most fatalities and told us the Catherdeal just got a 2 million dollarfacelift, just for it to be destroyed. The back of it was okay, but the front was a mess. He said it was most likey going to be pulled down. Taxi wages are now half of what they used to be, simply because people are too scared to go to Christchurch, and most of the main hotels are destroyed. We also drove past the old church that had the '185 White Chairs' which was put up a year after the earthquake to remember the lives that were lost in the awful natural disaster.
We got to the bus about 15mins before it was meant to leave and boarded, but bus driver didn't seem to care about much, and made us load our luggage.. I thought that was a bit rude.. I'm pretty sure that's their jobs? But we got on and choose the front seats so we could get the best view of the drive down. Apparently he didn't have any pick ups or drop offs until Wanaka, so we were super early everywhere we went. We stopped for about 30mins at a town, where Kristy and I got a hot choc to keep us warm! It was 11am and 4degrees outside! Mental!
We drove for a while longer and got to Takapo really early, and had over an hour for a stop! We had a look around, and went into a pub for some lunch. Kristy was hesitant on getting the pumpkin soup, but did anyway, also getting chips incase it was disapointing. It was. I ended up eating most of the soup, and I don't even like pumpkin soup! Mum and dad called while we were there, it was quite good to talk to them and know what's happening back home.
Then it was time to get back on the bus, where we would go straight through to Wanaka. It didn't take too long, and we were still 15mins early. We checked into Base Backpackers, and were in a 10 bed dorm.. That was full! It was horrible. The room smelt funny and there was a creepy guy trying to hit on us. We also hassled (and by hassled I mean asked nicely) the guy at reception about State Of Origin, and found out it was on Sky Sports at 10.30pm.. We would have to find a pub then!
After a walk around the small town, we decided to change our booking and leave a day early. There wasn't much to do here and the sooner we got to Queentown, the better!
Most of the night we spent in the lounge, until we showered and went to bed. Tomorrow we will get to Queenstown and start the hurt for jobs!
