Today was amazing! After breakfast (yes it was a late one) we set off to the ferry terminal where we caught one to Devonport. Before I read the information booklet about Devonport, I thought it was just meh, but I soon discovered it would be amazing!
We got there after a 10min ferry ride, and straight away I felt like I was in an American love movie. It was a beautiful, small, charming town that was so green & colourful! It had a lot of individual shops which offered unique items (pricey of course) and even a second hand book shop which boasted rare & collectible books! Just quietly, this is where I got mums 'mothers day' gift from!
There were many little shops with adorable items in them, I wish I could have bought more but backpackers are on a budget! The coolest shop here was the 'Candyman' which had a lot of weird chocolates and goodies. We saw this candy 'Ant Farm', and they were REAL ants in the candy! I couldn't get over it! Apparently they taste like nerds.. But I don't think I'll be game enough to eat it.. It can be a gift for my brother! Haha.
After we finished browsing the stores, we headed up to 'Mt Victoria' summit. There wasn't much signage so we went in the wrong direction, but a lovely kiwi gentleman pointed us back in the right direction and told us we were lucky to be from Australia as we could 'bounce' up the hill! I told him we accidentally forgot to bring our kangaroos..!
ANOTHER hill! I'm beginning to think anything with the word 'summit' in it should be avoided. Luckly this hill was paved and wasn't as long as 'Rangitoto'. We got to the halfway mark and saw a sign saying 'bunkers' so we took the stairs there.
The view was incredible. We found a very green patch of grass and just sit there for a while admiring Auckland. After that, we found some hard to see stairs which lead to the top of the bunkers! It was quite scary being up that high with the wind the way it was, but was amazing all the same!
We took off again and made our way to the top of the mountain! There were cool things from the war up there, such as the disappearing gun, which was only fired once cos the vibration broke some of the residents windows! We sat there for a bit, before heading back down.
Out of all the lovely cafes on the island, we grabbed a footlong subway sandwich (cheap, delish & filling) and headed to the beach to eat. That was a terrible idea! It was absolutely freezing! We quickly migrated back to the park in the sun!
After lunch we thought we would head to 'Alexander lookout' which we saw on the map. I was guiding, so I took us in the wrong direction.. Of course. We turned back around and walked about half way before we could see the lookout. It was on top of a hill! (it cleverly avoided the word summit). One hill is enough for us for a day so back into town we went.
Bought a few things for a few people, then the ferry bought us home. We got back to the hotel, where i went to the bahtroom, and discovered I had left my toiletries bag there. It was very dissapointing to find someone had stolen my $50 Mary Kay mouisturiser & toothpaste! But they did leave my cleanser & everything else.. That will teach me for forgetting things
Soon it will be time for a coffee and some Internet, then we decided we would go to the 'International Foods' which is below Base Backpackers and grab a feed. Hopefully it's good, but it already has a fantastic reputation from my aunty marg. Tonight, the same as every night has been, we are b*****ED!
I also wanted to let everyone know that my AMAZING sister called me for 2.34 minutes yesterday and it cost her $13! Thankyou poohface :)

Heather Hey Amy....enjoyed the blog.....good on you!!! So many mountains to climb...so little time (and inclination). Meh, u seen 1 u seen 'em all!!! We saw mountains today too, and I absolutely no inclination to even go to the bottom. I'm mountain-ed out!!! We did a tour of the whole island today and it's awesome. We were at the top of a mountain at one stage, compliments of the bus, and it almost blew us away, so obvioulsy we're doing the same thing at the same time. Incredible.....However, I feel our climate is a smidgen warmer than yours..... And I hope u find the be-arch who stole your Mary Kay moisturizer....just check to see whose skin is looking radiant. And good old poohface is taking time to ring you.....has good old Marcus done that yet????? Keep on blogging, and I'll keep on reading.....
amyliz Yeah, I'm not much of a fan climbing mountains, I'd much rather take a bus! Or helicopter, which ever! And I bet Hawaii would be amazingly warm, wish I was there!! Glad you are enjoying/reading my blog, I'll have to read yours as well!
