So the last few days I have been busy starting my habitat analysis for Krik's sleeping and eating trees and also helping Danica do hers. We went out this morning to try and do the last two plots, but to get to the first one we ended up walking through knee deep swampy mud and crawling through vines. We had planned to stay out all day to do both of the sites, so had lunch with us, but ended up just doing the one. It took us almost an hour to find the area, so we took a different route back which turned out to be much more open without so many vines and no mud at all... it took us 15 minutes. The boat ride back was so good though. The elephants are back around this area, a few nights ago I had to come back from Krik as they were in the forest, but we saw them on the river bank, there were about 40 of them and they were all swimming and rolling around in the mud. There were quite a few babies around too which were so cute. While we were watching them though the sky turned black and from the boat we could see that it was pouring with rain in the forest next to us. It was so surreal sitting dry in the boat in bright sunshine looking up and seeing rain pour from a black sky. It actually looked like someone was pouring glitter down. We did eventually get soaked in the rain but used it back at the studios to wash the mud out of our socks and shirts.
News on my project, Ben just left from visiting for a few days and with him he brought the new loris and tarsier collars. We also found out that Krik's collar actually works for 7 months and not 3... Noone really knows why 3 months is what everyone thought, but it's good as I can follow him for another 4 months now. I am also going to start walking other trails once a week to try and find/catch other lorises or tarsiers which should be good.
Other news, a guy called Simon is arriving tomorrow to teach us how to climb the canopy platform here and to also fix the orangutan bridge ('rope' over a tributary which connects fragmented forest). Other than that not much news, a new volunteer has arrived from the US and myself and Josie are going to Singapore on Wednesday!!
