Hi all, just a quick update.
All is good here, still carrying on with going out every night following the little Krikster. Last week was a bad week and hardly saw him, most nights not at all. But this week has been so good! Two nights ago he was just casually walking above us about 3m high. He then came down a vine within an arm's reach away from my head, he didn't seem to notice the lights, but seemed to sense me at one point so walked backwards back up the vine about 5m away. He then sat and had a little clean and seemed to curl up and go to sleep for a bit. I'm not sure if this has been seen much, as they're not well studied here no one really knows where they sleep. By going out in the day, the signal seems to always come from a dense viney area. Last night was similar, he came down to 2m high unaware of us being there and hugged the tree and licked the sap. I talked to my boss the other day about my project and he's willing to buy some more collars so I can carry following him. Only problem is I think this collar will die before I have time to find him and put the new one on! I've also got to go out and walk transects to see if I can find at least one more to collar so I can compare them. One girl was here for 6 months going out most nights and didn't catch any….
As I follow Krik at night, in the day apart from sleeping I have a lot of free time! After I had found Krik's sleeping site yesterday I took the American volunteer, Maggie, out on a trail and she has been desperate to see an orang-utan. We saw three at once! A female with her baby and another female was with her. I imagine I will go out with the other projects once the volunteers have left to help out. Josie and Becky are setting up transects in different habitat types and trying to catch small mammals, conducting frog surveys and setting up camera traps so they're busy busy at the moment.
I keep getting asked about the food here, so just in case you're interested…. There's a lot of rice or noodles, chicken or fish in various forms, either battered or in lots of different sauces and then stir fry kind of veg and salad. Sometimes there is poppadoms or onion bajii type things and then fruit for pudding! One very weird fruit is called snake skin, which is kind of avocado shaped and has really scaley skin, hence the name and inside is kind of hard-ish segments which I think taste a bit like starburst… it's a very strange fruit.I'm not sure if I like it or not.
Right I'm rambling so shall leave it there!
