We've moved up to Springbok, the capital of Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South Africa.
In Aug/Sept this place is a carpet of wild flowers, right now it is a very hot sandstone desert with it's own beauty, but not one we can explore in these temperatures!
We may head to the coastal town of Alexander Bay, once a restricted diamond area, to see the birdlife at the Orange River estuary but right now we are staying close to flush toilets!
Springbok is a strange little town in the middle of nothing, a bit like London really! There is a little Kopje (hill) where the Boers under Jan Smuts blew up the British fort. You do wonder what any of them were doing here in those days, and I expect most of them thought the same thing.
One of our trailer batteries packed up during the 400km drive up from Lamberts Bay so we've had to buy a new one. Financially that puts us on a bread and water diet (just as well given our stomach problems!) until we get the monthly rental in early Feb. Our UK tenants have extended for 3 or maybe 6 months so that is good news, we've had the house occupied since we left.
Now that the car and the trailer have had their check ups for our Namibian trip I'm going to get Angela tested as well. Her hearing is going and her eyesight is not up to map reading anymore. She is expensive to maintain in food and alcohol. If anyone out there wants to buy her please contact me through the usual channels.
Springbok may be our last internet coms for some time, at least until we are well up Namibia at Walvis Bay or Swakopmund. Thanks for reading these updates and looking at the photos.
Have to go now, the toilet beckons!
