Knysna has been a difference experience to the rest of our trip. It is more like the Med or the Californian coast than Africa.
We've seen major wealth alongside extreme poverty, the contrast more stark here as the wealth is more obvious than anywhere else we've been.
We encountered the usual Xmas/New Year holiday issues, like how to get in anywhere for a drink and how to avoid listening to Auld Lang Syne.
On the plus side we've body surfed in the Indian Ocean (but only in the shallows in case a Great White shark was around), gone canoeing up pristine river estuaries, walked in some lovely forests containing big Yellowood trees and driven up and down some awesome road passes.
Angela has fed orphans at the Knysna Elephant Sanctury (she nearly had the beetroot for herself) and it was an exhilerating pleasure to be able to touch them without being mashed to a pulp!
We are off tomorrow morning to Arniston, some 360km further west on the Garden Route, for 3 days. We hope to visit the nearby De Hoop nature reserve for some birdwatching, it is a twitcher's paradise (though we are probably visiting at the wrong time of year, a trick of ours).
