On Tuesday 30 June we set off for Oban which was not very far away. It was hot again....mid twenties.
We stopped off on the way to take a look at Stalker Castle, it was on an island so is only acessable by boat ....we arrived in Oban mid morning and found our accomodation, Corriemar Hotel, which was on the Esplanade overlooking the harbour, looked very nice.
We left the car to explore the town. Oban is the "Seafood Capital of Scotland", we had a bit of lunch and bought a few souveniers and headed back to the hotel.
When we arrived the lady of the house asked if we wanted rooms with a seaview to which Colin jumped at, she neglected to telll us that it was up four flights of stairs (see Vivvy resting before she tackles the next flight). It was a very strange hotel, it was more like a museum, it was cluttered with all sorts of things. We had a lovely room which had a sitting room attached. Colin and Sheila scored the room with the four poster bed and canopy......which was fitting as it was Sheila's 60th Birthday.
We went to a lovely restaraunt for dinner overlooking the harbour then drove up to McCaigs Tower, it was built by Alistar McCaig in the early 19th Century to house a Art Gallery and Museum, he was inspired by the Colesseum (can't you tell) but when he died nobody bothered to complete it and now it is in parkland on top of the hill with magnificent views, lots of walking again, most of it uphill.
Off to the Lake District for a couple of days from here, we were going to go to Dunoon next but it is the swine flu capital of the UK and we don't want to push our luck.
