Day 24. We left Cooktown in the rain but drove quickly into sunshine and onto the Atherton Tableland. This is a pleasant agricultural area and the scenery is worthwhile. RM was unaware, despite his Barista status in Bywong, that Mareeba is the centre of about 70% of the production of Australian grown coffee. JM won some points on this. We stopped at Coffee Works for a coffee and to purchase coffee. It is a very interesting establishment for a town like Mareeba.
Then we drove a short way down the Kennedy Hway to Rocky Creek War Memorial Park, a 'freeish' camp. We were astonished at the number of vans here. The Mareeba Rodeo had been on over the last weekend but was over now. Apparently, people here are waiting for the Mareeba Xmas in July festivities! Good grief! RM had a pleasant chat with some men heading for the Cairns Show to compete in the wood chopping events. I read and practiced my guitar. Prawns, steak, salad and a red for dinner then 2 more episodes of Downton Abbey.
