Day 34. Dry old country between Julia Creek and Hughenden. The lack of the usual rainfall shows. We suffered our first transport injury with our windscreen sustaining a crack from a rock, thrown up by an overtaking road train. Grrrrrr....
Hughenden is part of the dinosaur trail that encompasses Winton. Ancient country. We managed to get an overflow site at the van park. It is full owing to the town's annual country music festival being on. Still a nice site.
At a loose end on a Friday night, we went off to the opening night concert of the Festival. We were promised catering by the local Pony Club for a meal and this lived up to expectations. We had an iced Merlot each as well. But the concert was great, even though we had never heard of the artists, not that that means anything as we know very little about the Australian country music scene, except for Slim Dusty and John Williamson. There was a Slim Dusty sound alike and Mop and the Dropouts, Jim Haynes and an excellent young family group, the O'Donoghues. They were all pretty good. Haynes was very funny as well as a good singer, poet and ukulele player. The Diggers Entertainment Centre, where it was held, is a wonderful new building. The night was certainly an unexpected bonus!
