Day 17. Leaving Elle to mind the camp, we drove appropriately through misty rain to Mossman Gorge. "Nestled in the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest, Mossman Gorge contains the oldest, continuously surviving rainforest on earth. Just one hectare of the 120,000 hectare forest can contain over 30,000 species of plants and animals. Considered by many to be the evolutionary cradle for much of Australia’s plant and wildlife species, the forest has managed to survive for over 135 million years and, with the right protection, is expected to thrive for generations to come." (MG Website). Let's hope so. It is a wonderful mystical place. It is run by the local aboriginal people, and the set up is superb.
We returned to the van for lunch, picked up Elle, and headed for Port Douglas.... from the sublime to the not quite ridiculous! Four Mile Beach (no dogs) is a lovely palm fringed beach and the town has some lovely old buildings. You would not want for food, drink or clothing here, nor resort style accommodation. We were happy to return to Newell Beach, where a dog can play on the sand.
