Day 25. A mixed day weather wise and countryside wise. Leaving Mareeba in fine weather, we drove into fog and misty rain as we drove south again. The countryside had remnant rainforest, and parts were reminiscent of the far south coast of NSW. The temperature dropped to 15 degrees at one point. The road was rough, narrow and wound through hills. It was windy and we saw our first Qland wind turbines. Beautiful countryside! Later, we turned west onto the Savannah Way and everything got dryer and warmer. We made Georgetown in 27 degree heat. Lovely. However, we drove the last 70 ks on a single lane road, with the odd bit of lovely wide new road. It was my first experience towing the van in those conditions but we made it.
We planned to be in Georgetown on day 26 to meet Ros and Alex but we were able to get here easily on day 25. We did not book. Big mistake! The two van parks were full and there were vans pulled up all over the roads outside. I went into one to at least get a booking for 2 vans on the next night. The owners had a group of van owners they were trying to find sites for. I tagged along as there might be an unpowered site for us apparently. Suddenly, a voice called out 'Judith'. It was Alex. They had arrived a day early too and had booked ahead. What serendipity that we both ended up in the same van park a day early and we bumped into each other at a crucial time. We were able to park right next to them on an unpowered site and run our power from them. We even have water.
We both decided on Georgetown early so we could watch the final State of Origin. Great minds and all that. Loads of food and drink and conversation later, we watched my team Qland beat everyone else's team NSW in a tight game. A hot shower and so to bed, after a curate' s egg type of day.
