Day 14 - A gloomy start to the day followed the torrential rain and an amazing light show from the thunderstorms that passed through the region. Starting at about 11pm they went on till at least 3 or 4am, decreasing in strength overnight. The sky was lit up on many occasions by the sheet lightening and the trees around us were fantastically back lit.
We enjoyed a light breakfast and then packed the car and headed out on our trip through the Cantal region towards the the Burgundy region, near Macon. For much of the drive it was light rain interspersed with dry spells. The first part of the journey was through the mountainous region of the Cantal where it was quite alpine/chalet style and no doubt popular with skiing in the winter. Afterwards, once on the autoroute we went through the Puy Dome area where the hills are remains of some extinct volcanoes.
Eventually we reached the next destination, Chateau de Vaulx in the countryside of southern Burgundy region. The area is quite reminiscent of the Devon countryside of rolling hills, fields and green pastures.
The Chateau is a stunning building with extensive grounds and amazing views all around of the countryside.
On arrival we were shown around by Francesca, a friend of the owner Marty. She advised us that some people that were in for 1 night wanted to stay another and as a result we had been upgraded to the suite. We were of course pleased as we now had a separate space where we could set up the dogs.
We met up with Marty who is quite a character and is fluent in at least four languages.
At 8pm we went down for dinner and were treated to some great food; Courgette soup to start, followed by veal rolled with sage and with new potatoes and celeriac mash. Afterwards a cheese course then semi-frodo of mulberry and praline. All very nice and as good as restaurant if not better.
The dinner was with four other guests so we were all sat on the same large dining table. Both couples were from Switzerland, although different areas. So whilst they could speak French and German well and some English, we could manage some French, or very little in my case. Just goes to show how poor we are at languages in the UK.
Tomorrow we have a visit to the vets lined up to get the dogs passports sorted and then a trip to Chateau Dree nearby and the nearby town of Charolles.
