Day 16 - Regrettably, we had to leave the Chateau de Vaulx and move on to our next stop at Auberge Beusarderie in Nitry. We took the more scenic route and avoided the autoroutes and the toll charges. For a big part of the journey we were the only car or one of a few once off the main routes.
We arrived at our destination to find the car park jam packed for the lunch trade. The restaurant of the auberge is clearly popular as it is just off the autoroute and clearly serves good food.
We finally checked in once it had quietened down a bit and were shown to our room which is quite nice. A big beamed ceiling, earthy paint tones and a decent size. The room is off the courtyard which is themed around the countryside of the area.
For our trip in the area we travelled the short 10 minutes drive to Noyers sur Serein. A very pretty village consisting of a good number of half timbered houses, quiet back streets and built along a lazily flowing river called the Serein.
We enjoyed a good hour or so and a coffee and tea before heading back. After dropping off the dogs we popped around to the local vineyard, or at least the place where the grapes are turned to wine, the vineyards being a good 15km north west of Nitry.
We tasted some Chablis and Burgundy, both whites and one red, a Pinot Noir. We ended up purchasing two cases which we now need to fit into the luggage somewhere. Maybe the dogs will have to give up some space.
In the evening, we went to the restaurant of the auberge and had a very good meal. The mains, a duck and a lamb, were better than the starters, but overall we could understand why it is so popular and that you need a reservation really, but you could chance it. If you needed to stop for lunch on your journey south, this would be it. Better than the Aires on the autoroutes.
Tomorrow we headed to our final stop before our train back to the UK on Sunday, the Holiday Inn Calais Coquelles.
