205kms today up to the Lakes District. We'd heard from many people that it was beautiful but we really couldn't have imagined just how spectacular it is.
The drive up was stunning with rolling green hills and then when we got to the district we were surprised by just how tall the hills got, some with running waterfalls coming down through the joins, others with stone walls all over them for the farmers, which must have dated back hundreds of years.
Our first stop was in Windermere for some lunch and to try find somewhere to stay. Afraid to say that hours of searching on the net at Lizzie's, and then the tourist info place here turning up nothing, meant we pressed on further north.
Before heading off though we drove through Windermere, down to the lake at Browness (which was a gorgeous little town), quick stop at the Beatrix Potter attraction (Phil and Sherrol, Mitch's bday pressie has been purchased - wooden dominos, mini books and his own 2-handled cup with Peter rabbit on it!)
Still without somewhere to stay for the night we eventually ended up at Derwentwater Manor (see the pic - we're at the bottom right), where we are now in a 1bed apartment. Everything else was just too small for an inquisitive 1yr old so we are bedding down here for 2 nights.
Are now half way through our trip and it's the first time its just been the 3 of us - kind of bizarre really! The little guy is in bed, I'm about to head off for my second shower of the day (joy - first time this trip!) and Ganey is watching the Spain v Portugal game (oh wait, he's asleep, its 8.30)
Oh, and you'll all be totally shocked to know that for our first meal alone (couldn't dare eat out again) we cooked spaghetti bolognese - and there's even enough for tomorrow night too (hmm, Ree and Tim will be rolling their eyes!)
