Arrivederci Italy - fino all’anno prossimo
Tonight is our last night in Italy, for this trip anyway, and what better way to say Grazie per i ricordi than with a dinner on the terrace overlooking the harbour.
Once again the memories are full of the people we unexpectedly met, like the policeman who made us panini when all the cafes were closed, and the guy in the laundromat who offered us his user card when we didn’t have enough change for the dryers.
And then there was the 80 + Italian from Preston who clearly learnt English in the Australian way, when he explained to us with that heavy Italian accent that never seems to leave them, that he bloody lost his bloody camera etc, etc and his wife who went to Star of the Sea in Gardenvale, or another guy who went to Gardenvale Primary. It just goes on and each one makes a far more indelible mark on the memory than all the churches and museums. Then of course there are the “food experiences” when pasta and raw prawn meat turns out to be fantastic, or the scallops with stuffed zucchini flowers, and the big bowl of the sweetest and smallest mussels for 5€.
Italy never fails to surprise and satisfy all at the same time.
So until next year, it’s Addio and on with the holiday.
