So this is Christmas, and what have we done? 🤔 we’ve given up sunshine, 🌞for snow ❄and some fun
After 14 hours of Emirates food and hospitality we, Jean, Sarah and me, arrived in Dubai en route to Prague for the start of the great Christmas market challenge of 2003/4
After settling in to the Emirates lounge in Dubai, we had our first BLOG MOMENT. Yes, less than 1 hour in to our lay over, and a very large guy came and asked if we would like a shoe shine. I said no as I was wearing a suede type shoe, Sarah in her ever matter of fact fashion, said no because her shoes didn’t need shining, but of course Jean didn’t want to offend so she agreed and gave him her new boots.
As he disappeared into the crowd with her boots, the first furrows appeared on her brow with an “😱 OMG 😱 what have I done?” So I was dispatched to track him down, not an easy task given the crowds, while she continued eating her mango cake. Reporting back that her boots or the shoeshine man were nowhere to be found, any reassurance that she shouldn’t worry because her socks looked fine probably didn’t help. Anyway, we needn’t have worried because 20 mins later the boots reappeared, looking much the same as when they left, but with Aud$26 bill. I was so glad it wasn’t my idea.
Then it was time for our next flight to Prague, just a short 6 hr hop.
Weather on arrival was -2 C. It had been snowing all morning and the wheels of the aerobridge were frozen to the asphalt and it couldn’t be moved into position. After a plethora of high viz vests and arm waving, they finally got it into position and we were off the plane and into Prague.
Although it had stopped snowing a few hours earlier, the city was still blanketed in snow and the pine trees were a magical sight.
Of course our apartment, in Wenceslas square just had to be in a Pedestrian Only Zone, so it was a trudge through the snow and sludge to our apartment front door dodging the lumps of snow falling from the buildings. We arrived 30mins before we could get in, so what better way to kill the time than a couple of serves of cream layered carrot cake washed down with coffee and hot chocolate at a nearly by kavárna (cafe).
Once in and settled, it was out into the night for our first foray among the chestnut roasters, sausage bbqs, Christmas trees and crowds, lots of crowds!!
It had been a long couple of days, so a quick stop at the supermarket for some breakfast supplies and we were all in the land of nod by 6:30pm. 😴💤
