The ride from Monopoli to Ostuni was today’s challenge. Although it was only 25C, down among the stone fences and olive groves, with no shade, it started to take its toll. But, who could complain about a break or two, having a snack under an olive tree.
The road from Monopoli along the coast is Puglia’s version of the Great Ocean Road - wonderfully scenic but it was like being in the middle of the Grand Prix. Although they were driving fast, the Italian drivers are incredibly considerate of cyclists, of which there were many.
Soon enough Ostuni loomed into view, the “White City” perched on top of the highest hill in sight. We had been warned that some might have to walk up as the road is quite steep, average 5% gradient for the last 3-4 kms.
It is now that I get my revenge for all those stairs. A carbon frame road bike trumps an aluminium hybrid any day plus, I get to rest at each change of road while I wait for the walker. But to be fair, Jean did ride up for a good part of the climb.
Again, our accomodation was just great, another Palazzo in the middle of the old town. After so many nights of pasta or fish, it was time to go back to basics, so it was pizzas all round.
Tomorrow is an early start (8:00) as we have to catch a train for part of the next leg.
