India and Nepal 2022
Pamplona After covering 50 miles over the past four days on challenging terrain, I have decided to give my body and particularly my feet a rest today. I said goodbye to Alesia who has been a great walking companion with lots of positive energy and wished her well for the remainder of her Camino. I am strolling around on my own today and it's a pleasure not to be in walking boots and carrying a heavy rucksack. This city is synonymous with bull running and fighting and there are constant reminders of this Basque tradition everywhere here in Pamplona. I walked around the bullring and found a gate open. Reckoning that it is easier to seek forgiveness than permission, I went inside and stood in the arena before being told to make my way out! The bull ring or 'Plaza de Toros' was built in 1921 and holds over 12,000 spectators. A special aficianado was Ernest Hemingway who wrote 'The sun also rises' in 1926 based on his experiences here and in particular the festival of San Fermin. Red wine and tapas is the order of the day but the serious walking starts tomorrow early in the morning!
