Friday - Overcast
Apart from the weather today it was going to be much the same as yesterday. Just taking advantage of the wheels, by visiting pretty towns and lapping up the kms in this beautiful part of France.
We were heading to the riverside towns of Beynac and La Roque Gageac today. They were about and hour drive away from Jugeals Nazareth, but only 10mins apart from each other. So we should have plenty of chill out time today.
The drive today was good, nice and quiet on the roads and we followed the Dordogne river for most of the way.
The two towns were very similar, they both had castles high above the village and its houses were built into the cliffs that they back onto.
La Roque Gageac houses are built in the local yellow stone and along the river Dordogne, but some of the medieval houses have found space up the hill, towards the caves high up in the cliffs above. Im not sure if the caves were lived in or were used to defend the town. The most imposing building here is the Chateau de la Malartrie, But as old as the town is, it is also one of the most recent buildings, having been built in the 19th century.
Beynac is a very attractive village and is also spread along the northern bank of the river, and then continues up the hill to the chateau perched above. Beynac is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France too, and I have no doubt about that status. Its a very pretty town with many narrow lanes and lovely traditional Dordogne honey coloured buildings with picture perfect cliffs above.
When we had finished looking around the towns we went looking for a supermarket to buy ourselves some picnic food.
We ending up finding what we thought was a deserted camping ground. Turns out that it was just empty. After an hour or so of resting a man came up to our car and asked us kindly to leave.
It was a nice spot, we had some snacks and ciders overlooking the river. We watched lots of people canoeing past too. We thought about giving it a go but we felt pretty lazy today haha!
We left the campground around 3pm and headed back to our area. We stopped off at a super market in Brive to pickup dinner and breakfast again, and because it was only 4:30 we picked up some prawns to have with some beers before dinner back at the hotels beer garden.
