Wednesday - Sunny
We had 3-4hrs on the road today, and had a few stops at some towns a long the way. We hit the road nice and early after we finished off all the food for breakfast, which probably ended up being too much. We were so full!
The drive back up north wasn't too bad, but there were a lot more cars on the roads compared to last Sunday. This time we saw loads of trucks we had to take a detour because the traffic came to a stand still.
We made it to Cahors, which is the capital of Lot, in central France. We had a nice hour long stretch of the legs around town. We walked along the main street, through the old town and some churches. We came across a flea market too, the market lead us down to the river where there was Pont Valentre. A bridge built the the 13th century, we walked to the middle of the bridge and looked back out across town. On the towers high up just under the eave, there are sculptures of a devil goblin creatures. Cool hey?!
Then we followed the U-shaped river back around to where we parked the car. We were tempted to go into so many wine bars along the way, but we still had a fair bit of driving ahead so we made our way to the next town.
The road following the other side of the river gave us some really nice views back into Cahors. Further along we passed through some very pretty hilly country side. It reminded me of driving on some country roads back home.
It was about 30min to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and what a fantastic looking village it was. The village was built on the side of very steep hill, above a river. You can't drive inside the village, you have to park and walk to access the villages narrow paths. There is a road leading past the village down the hill to the river.
We ended finding a camp ground by the river and dunked our feet in the chilly water. It was a hot day today glad we found the perfect spot to cool off, we had the shade of the trees and the river keeping us cool.
After the break we had about an hours drive trough more beautiful countryside and little remote villages to Gramat. There we picked up some lunch and continued on to Rocamadour. Another awesome looking town. Rocamadour is built into a cliff, in a gorge, above a river. It is also a pretty important town for pilgrims. There are a number of churches and chapels throughout this touristy town, which has been attracting pilgrims for hundreds of years. We walked up through the streets and churches right to the top of the gorge, where the is a castle and a nice view as well. There is an elevator that gets you halfway up, but we were feeling energetic and enjoyed the walk.
We then went back down to the car and went to go find our hotel. Again with no actual address we got as close as we could, then had to look for signs. I called the hotel after not being able to spot it, but with no answer we thought oh no not again! We ended up pulling over and getting some directions in French from a man who sold cheese in a trailer.
Well some how I managed to extract a few correct details from the conversation, and Kim spotted a sign to the hotel.
The hotel is nice it's above a pub that sold cheap beer and is about 7kms out of Brive-La-Gaillarde, and that's where we went to go buy some dinner to bring back to the hotel to eat.
