A Year Away
Just a few quick notes here about the last week that I've been here in Pana, since there has been a request for "more journal entries."
First. I really haven't had much "homesickness" here, mostly when I think about people I miss, I just want them to get their butts down here so I can show them this gorgeous country and take them to really groovy restaurants and make them eat wierd things. For instance, yesterday Pajaro made me try Ceviches, which are basically seafood cocktails with tomatos, onions, lemon, shrimp and clam. With ketchup if you so desire. I'm not such a big fan of seafood, but it was actually pretty good. Even with raw clam. But what I would do just about ANYTHING for right about now is a fresh chocolate chip cookie. Actually, if someone gave me an oven to cook with I just might weep for joy. It's all well and good to have a friend with a stove, but I just can't fry up brownies like I would like to. :) That's the first thing I'm doing when I get home. I'm making cookies. I did find some extremely expensive peanut butter the other week, and it made my day. Woo hoo!
Last week Pajaro borrowed a friend's DVD player, so we have been watching movie after movie after movie. Which is an interesting experience since every video is so different, language-wise. Whether it's dubbed in Eng or Span, or if there are subtitles are not. Each show is an adventure in trying to understand, probably for the both of us, depending. One fun movie was the Bob Espoja (Spongebob) Movie. They sing some song in there about being peanuts...? I don't know, but now both of us can sing the "Soy un cacahuate, si!" song. ("I am a peanut, yes!)
Yesterday I went back to Leti, who works in the tortilleria next door, just to say 'hey'and see what was up, but I ended up staying there for quite a while. First she wanted me to teach her English, then I wanted her to teach me more Kakchiquel, then I practiced tortillando again. I'm not quite such an idiot with the tortillas anymore, now I can get them the right size, but they still come out way ugly, and any shape but round. I did do two that were good enough to actually grill though, and I was SO proud. :)
That's all for the moment. I'm about to run out of time here. I think I'm heading off to Monterrico in the next few days, so there will be an interesting blog entry sometime next week. Take care all!--->Natalie
