A Year Away
Last time I wrote, I was in Chichicastenango which is a city in Guate that is famous for its gigantic market. And rightly so. The whole city center and all the little sidestreets where COVERED with tents full of fabrics and hammocks and mayan artifacts and who knows what other stuff I never even saw. It was absolutely mad with the venders calling out and others carrying their wares down the street on their arms and heads. But honestly, that was about the only thing in Chichi that was worth seeing. When the market was over, I checked out the church which was plain, but worth sitting a while in, and that was about it. I hung out in the little park and in my hostel, (which was also plain, but worth spending time in) before getting out of the city.
I found that Chichi was also not a very good base for traveling and I would have to backtrack a bit. To get to my next stop I could easily have gone back to the capital and up to Coban, but I chose instead to go back to Panajachel again because I missed the lake and the people I knew there. So I got back to Pana and immediately ran into Sergio and Gustavo again who welcomed me back to the city and I've kind of been stuck here ever since. Hanging out with them I've met most of the hippee-style street vendors who make their own jewelry and sell on the street. They're quite a groovy bunch. Last night Ricardo brought out his drum, Austin (Costa Rican) his pan pipes and Sergio his maracas and they played on the street into the night. Then this guy Jordan from Honduras showed up with his girlfriend and these two nunchuck-type chains that he started swinging around to the music. It was interesting enough just like that, but then the girlfriend brought out the lighter fluid and they lit them on fire! It was SO COOL. That's what Jordan does to earn some extra cash, breath and dance fire. :)
That same group of people is talking of going to the Bay Islands in Hondouras this week and Sergio and I are thinking of joining them. Wow, how plans do change.... :)
