23.09.11. Les Andelys Since our first visit with Pat and Chris on our bikes in 2004 we have been back six times, specifically to the Hotel de Paris owned by Danielle (front of house) and Jacques (chef) Thiery. Oysters for both of us, duck for me and turbot for D - wonderful. We chatted with an English couple staying at the hotel and met up with them next day at Giverny. Our bed for the night was the nearby small car park, where we found we had a French neighbour. Amazing how campervans seem to attract one another.
24.09.11. Giverny. Not an official aire but an area set aside for motorhomes. It was September last time we were here. Went round the major American exhibition with paintings by, amongst others, Monet, Pissarro, Corot, Gaugin, and Dégas.
Next day there was a 'Braderie' - where people compete to display the most hideous junk imaginable. If looking for a dirty, plastic, broken 'objet' go no further than a braderie - you'll find it!.
26.09.11. Brezolles. On our way here stopped at Evreux and visited the remarkably uninteresting cathedral. Mind, the exterior is impressive and parking charges are suspended between 12.30 and 2.00pm plus a free 20 minutes on arrival.
Not a good sight-seeing day on the whole as our next stop was Anet. Last time we were here we had the good sense not to visit the chateau, lived in and died at by Diane de Poitiers. This time we forked out 16€ to see five rooms and were led round with some ten others by a hefty, unsmiling middle-aged French woman. I asked if she spoke any English. 'Non'. I asked if we were in the Red Guard Room. 'Oui'. I left it at that and her without 'Le pourboire pour la Guide'. Neither of us merited a goodbye.
Tiny Marboué for the night of the 27th and a good 3.5 miles on the 28th to pretty and interesting Chateaudun. Took advantage of free wi-fi at a local café but wasn't able to sort my now non-functioning e-book. That seems to be the end of The Times for this holiday.
29.09.09. Today managed a few more miles than yesterday and stopped at Blois. Sadly, the aire has been closed. We could have stopped the night on the far side of the river but, after a not very enjoyable lunch - boeuf croustillant with lentils, fried potato, salad and a dollop of curry sauce - we moved on ending up at Angé.
