Can't remember where we were when last we blogged but think it may have been Thiers. If it was, we have since stopped at
St. Pourçain-sur-Sioule on the 16th October, Sancoins - our second time this year - on the 19th., Rogny-
Les-Sept-Écluses on the 20th., Gurgy, (a nice canal-side stop that we've used several times) on the 21st., Bray-sur-Seine (22nd), Epernay (23rd), Attigny (24th), Bavay (25th), Bergues (26th) and finally, Gravelines on the 27th, staying until we catch the midnight ferry from Dunkirk on the 31st.
We booked a table at the Hotel-Restaurant du Beffroi in Gravelines for Sunday lunch. The French tend to eat out Sundays and it can be very busy. There were four people at one table when we arrived at 12.30 and nobody else came!. We had the menu Sympa, a formule at 18€ and which I thought included either a beer or a 1/4 pinchet of vin rouge. Needless to say, it didn't and we got charged 10.50€ for 50cl of quite rough Domaine d'Artois plus another 3€ for a bottle of water. The starters and pudding were quite nice but we both chose Carbonnade à la Flamande with chips - which was exactly what we got so I suppose we could'nt complain, knowing that they don't eat vegetables in Belgium. Had the lumps of beef (neck, we thought) been a little less glutinous and chewy D might have managed a little more. Oh well .....
We met up again with Sue and Stuart whom we first met at Decize and had a cheese baked rice supper and a very pleasant evening with them. They were catching the 4.00am ferry from Dunkirk on the 30th..
So - that's it for this trip. Nothing particularly wonderful or exciting has happened but we've been to launderettes we wouldn't normally have been to, enjoyed new sights and met pleasant people and OAP's can't hope for much more.
I intend having the occasional blog even when back in the UK, as with having no base (a nicer way of saying we're baseless) it's a way of letting friends and relations know where we are, should that be of any interest.
À Bientôt, P&D
(sent from the ferry as we come in to Dover)
