Long Way To NZ
Switzerland: 28th March - 1st April 2006
Flew into Basel in pretty s***e weather, in fact 10 degrees and pissing it down. After a week of temperatures in the late 20s it was pretty dissapointing. Basel is a pretty city with about 30 museums apparently. I only felt the need to visit one, the Swiss historical museum. Definately worth a look.
from Basel we moved onto Zurich. It is very similar to Basel in that all the streets seemed to be lined with Gucci Prada and Rolex stores. But the nightlife is pretty damn good with plenty of bars and clubs. Unfortunately you need to be a multi millionnaire to take advantage of it. I had to make do with a beer back at the hostel.
From Zurich we moved onto a small village called Lauterbrunnen in a valley in the Swiss Alps. This place is incredible. There are fantastic views of the Alps all around the Valley Hostel as well as endless numbers of waterfalls. There are plenty of hiking trails in the area, most accessed by rack rail or cable car. We walked a trail at 1500m where the snow was well over a metre deep in places.
This is what Switzerland is about. Dont bother with the cities. Head straight for the Alps.
