Long Way To NZ
So much to see in Vienna - definately need more than the three nights that we spent there. Stayed in probably the best hostel yet - Ruthensteiner! It even has its own garden - just whats needed now as it just seems to get hotter every time we move countries!
First night I had to have a Schnitzel - typical Austrian thing, basically a bit of (big bit of) pork in bread crumbs. I ordered the hamburger Schnitzel and it came with lettuce, potato, salad, beans, amoung other bits a peach! a whole peach! Went down a treat though.
After seeing all the sights we could possibly fit in - all very impressive, we found out that you could watch an Opera for 2euros. People had been trying to sell us tickets for up to 50euros during the week, but as long as you are prepared to queue for an hour and a half and stand during the performance it costs just 2 - bargain. Just our luck though, we bought our ticket and got into the opera house with an incredible view of the stage - but on one day in the month there is no opera, there is ballet! I ended up sitting through 3 hours of ballet - it was quite entertaining actually, orchestra were excellent and watching grown men prance around on their toes is pretty funny. Sorry to all those reading who are big ballet fans - have to admit its quite a talent ;)
Also spent three nights in Salzburg - the home of The Sound Of Music. They even do a cheesy Sound Of Music tour. I haven't even seen the film and if I did I know it would be rubbish so I gave the tour a miss. Hannah did go on it though and she said they were singing 'Those are a few of my favourite things' on the bus - thank god I didnt just do it for cultural reasons.
The city though is fantastic, a great castle over looking the city and the Alps, various churches and incredible buildings. We took a day trip out of the city to visit some ice caves. The entrance to the caves is 1500metres asl and they go on for 42km. We only visited the first 2km though (luckily) as that is where the main ice formations are - stalagmites and tites but made of ice. A really different place to visit, and it was snowing outside aswell.
We left Austria on 27th April and made our way to Munich, Germany.
