Long Way To NZ
Riga is the place to be, so different from Vilnius - there is loads to do, 3 nights was nowhere near enough to cover it all, in fact we missed out on seeing the main sights of the city.
There is a bobsleigh track one hour out of the city that is open to the public - expert drivers take you down the track on ice in winter or on wheels in summer. We made the hour journey there only to find that it is only open on weekends so missed out there - we got to see the pretty town called Sigulda though.
There is a 32km stretch of sandy beach (Jurmala) just to the north of the city. We hadn't had chance to visit a beach since Italy so it was a great change - bloody cold though. We only saw one guy brave enough to get in the water, and guess what, he was English, on a Stag Do!
On our last night in Riga, Ev arrived from Vilnius and Gerardo (Mexican) joined us to experience Riga nightlife. Gerardo got on the Tequila and the girls met this Latvian guy (depressed with a death wish, and smelt) that got us into a club for free. Pretty crap club though but we made it a good night!
I've got to come back here at some point, not only to go on the bobsleigh but also to have a go at 'shot guns and vodka'. Its an organised tour that basically entails drinking copious quantities of vodka followed by being given an AK47 to shoot at targets! Sounds fun!
We caught the bus from Riga to Tallinn on 24th May. Our Interail pass is not valid in the Baltic States - lost a lot of money because of that.
