Long Way To NZ
Although we weren't planning to spend all that long in Poland we ended up spending 9 nights there. Originally we were planning to travel to Kiev in the Ukraine after Krakow. But because of crap train connections it was going to take almost 24hours to get there.
Krakow is a great place, even better the weekend we visited - a student festival was on. In the main square a stage was up with Polish and Ukrainian bands playing some absolute classics - Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics was one of the better ones. It was the day after all Polish students finish their exams so it was no surprise that they were all hammered by midday - all dressed up in fancy dress!
We went on two day trips from Krakow - firstly to Auschwitz and then the Wieliczka salt mines. Obviously I have heard the stories of what went on at Auschwitz, but actually visiting it is pretty harrowing. Luckily for sanity sake the mind can't visualise just how many people were executed there. It was something I had to do but I can't say it was a particularly enjoyable day.
Wroclaw was our next home - great place with one of the largest squares in Europe. A great place to visit, but not all that much seems to happen there. Did find a great restaurant that served up possibly my favourite meal yet. Peirogi - sort of a pasta thing stuffed with meat!
We had heard from various travellers and Polish people that Warsaw was not really worth a visit. But it was the perfect place to break a journey between Wroclaw and Lithuania. Our hostel was absolutely miles away from the Old Town, which was actually pretty small. It is incredible to think that the whole area has been rebuilt from scratch after 80% of Warsaw was destroyed during the last few months of World War II.
In our hostel we met Ev, an Aussie living in Edinburgh. She joined us on the 12 hour trip up to Vilnius in Lithuania.
