This morning I decided to make french toast for everyone. I was getting sick of the usual breakfast. I had made french toast before and everyone really liked it. Caitlin was feeling a little better and decided to come with me to our project. The cement was not quite finished, but we were allowed to go back to the classrooms today. The playground looked still very dangerous for the kids, but that did not seem to bother the kids or the teachers.
Today, we were learning more about syllables. The kids had to name a drawing and colour as many boxes as there were syllables for the word. It was a great activity for me too because I was learning names of animals and other random things (more words added to my vocabulary). I realized while helping the kids that I was getting better and better at talking with the kids. I was becomming really fluent. I had brought a frisbee that day (Alex, my roommate brought some frisbees to give to the kids). I thought to myself: the Spaniards are not going to be the only ones that bring cool toys...
When recess came along, I felt that I outwitted the Spaniards by bringing a frisbee (and the kids seemed excited. However, the Spaniards brought to more volunteers from Spain (they were now 5). Most of the kids wanted to play with them. They won this battle once again...
I decided to go talk to Margoth, the 5 year old teacher about the abundance of volunteers. She said that she has no control over it and that she is never aware about who comes to the school. She then told me not to worry, because out of everyone, she preferred that I stay with her. I don't know why, but hearing those words made me feel relieved and made me want to stay (because I had been thinking of changing projects).
In the afternoon period, Margoth asked me to teach the kids the coulours (in Spanish AND in English). So for the first time, I was teaching...to a Spanish class!!!
Even the Spaniards came and sat in the back and watched me as I stole the show...Margoth was so impressed with how I taught the kids that she told Kacy (the 4 year old teacher), and Kacy wanted me to teach her kids tomorrow. The rest of the day was spent learning about the triangle. Again, I had to help Margoth create the activities in each of the kids' workbooks so that they would have something for homework.
As we walked back to the bus, the two teachers had invited us for cuy (a Peruvian meal, which is essentially guiney pig) next Wednesday. I was going back to meet with my Tandem partner again for 2:30pm. Today, Mijhaell and I talked about soccer, and that a group of volunteers play every Saturday morning. I asked if I can join.
After my Tandem, I went back home to eat (I know, I am always hungry!). Hassan had invited us to his place for a movie and pizza night. Caitlin and I were going to wait for supper at home and then go eat pizza at Hassan's. We waited for a long time. However, we had a new guest that kept us company. His name was Paul, he was from Australia. Alex was unfortunately leaving us the next morning and Paul was going to be my new roommate.
7:30pm arrived and the food finally came. We ate a bit and left quickly because we were late (we had to be there for 7pm). Hassan lived really far (he also gave mediocre directions) so we walked for about 30 minutes before Hassan met up with us and escorted us to his family house. There I met up with Logan and Nassim again with four of Hassan's roommates (two mothers with their two daughters of 15 and 21 years old). Hassan was living in a very wealthy home, his host family was really nice too serving us pizza, popcorn and drinks. We watched the movie "Knowing" (which I hate). I fell asleep halfway through. I woke up just in time to leave, and take a taxi back home. This was the first night where I really felt like I wasn't in Peru…I felt like I was just spending a night back home with a few friends.
