On Wednesday I was really nervous, because I met the other international students for the first time. I knew nobody and of course I wanted to make some friends.
However, after I arrived at school everybody was welcomed with a traditional Maori-welcome, which lasted for about one hour and was really weird: Somebody held a speech in Maori which was interrupted by children who sang Maori songs - I've never seen something like that before.
After that the international students did a trip to the city of Tauranga, to Mt Maunganui and to the hot pools (pools with very hot water which should have healing forces). I tried to talk to the other students (most of them are germans, some are from asia and some from brasil), but many of them already knew each other so it was a bit hard to do that. By the way I'm a bit shy, so it always takes me some time to make new friends, but the other students are all very nice and I hope I'll get to know them well after a while.
On Thursday I had my first real day at school. At the beginning I had no timetable, so I was late for my form class (In a form class the class teacher tells you what's going on at school and if your timetable has changed), but fortunately it was no problem. After that there was an assembly and after the assembly I had my first subject: Outdoor Education.
In Outdoor Education you go kayaking, camping, etc. and you learn something about nature and surviving. The teacher seems to be really cool and I think I will like this subject very much. My next subject was Chemistry: We're learning something I've learned some years ago in Austria, so I don't think Chemistry will be too hard. The teacher is OK. Then I had English: I think English won't be very hard, too, because the teacher is very cool and does not see to be very strict. After that I had Maths: I don't like the teacher very much but we're learning things I've learned years ago in Austria, so this subject won't be too hard as well. My last subject was building: When I chose it I thought it might be funny to build things, but I'm not sure if my decision was good: It's a bit boring and the teacher's got no authority, so everybody just shouts around in this class. That's really annoying and so I like this class at least.
I'll have every subject and the form class every day. I hope I'll make some kiwi friends but that's not easy because everytime I change my class I see new people and the kiwis are not very interested in me. But at least I've got the other international students. They're nice and I can have lunch with them, so I'm not alone :).
I hope I'll get used to this huge school with about 2000 students soon and that I'll make some kiwi friends. I'll write my next blog entry next week to tell you how I'm going ;)
