I was on a bush camp from Thursday to Friday with my Outdoor Education Class. It was, well,... an interesting experience.
We met at school on Thursday morning(2 teachers and 14 students) and went to Waihi by bus, which took about 1 hour. After that, we walked to a hut for 4 hours while the weather was wet and cold. At least it was an easy walk, the track was really flat.
Anyway, as soon as we got to the hut we started building our bivouacs in the forest. A bivouac or bivi is similar to a tent, but you only have a top sheet and a ground sheet(no tent poles), so you need a some ropes and also some trees to tie them around to make it standing.
Then, we went back to the hut to play some games until dinner. We had to cook it ourselves, I made some pasta with my friend over a gas cooker. After dinner, the teacher told us to leave us alone for one hour in the dark forest because we need to be alone sometimes in a world that is dominated by mobile phones and the internet. Well, he was serious: Everybody had to sit in the pitch black forest for one hour to think about our sins... I was surprised that it wasn't scary or boring, the time went quite quickly!
Back to the hut, we had half an hour to get ourselves ready for the night. And then(It was about 10pm) we went to our bivis with our sleeping bags and tried to sleep. It was quite hard for me, because there were 2 other people in the bivi and I was in the middle and couldn't move at all. It rained nearly all night, but luckily our bivouac was quite good so we didn't get wet. But it was so unconfortable that I hardly slept until the teacher woke us up at 7am.
We had breakfast in the hut and headed back to the bus station. It was raining and cold, of course, and we did a little bit of a nice extra walk(1 hour) to see some Kauri trees. You must understand hat I was completely wasted after I came back. The first thing I did was hopping into the spa pool and staying there for almost one hour;)
It was an exhausting experience so I was happy to have a long weekend(today is Queen's birthday, a holiday in NZ;)). I didn't do very much, I had a friend coming over on Saturday, bought some souvenirs for you on Sunday and did nothing really today.
I think this camp will be an experience I won't forget!

e.m. Do you really have so many sins that you need about an hour to think about them????
