October 2009 was the end of one beautiful story. I mean the story of McDonald's in Iceland. They shut down all the three McDonald's in Iceland on 31st of October. That was a sad day and I wanted to honor McDonald's by eating there at the last time here in Iceland. I wasn't the only pilgrim who wanted to have the really last burger. There was a huge line and I had to wait almost 30 minutes. My target was to get Big Mac meal but it was sold out so I had to be satisfied with two cheese burgers.
The collapse of the krona was the reason why McDonald's had to leave Iceland. McDonald's imports most of the ingredients and costs had doubled over the past year. It was just impossible to compete with the prices anymore. The funny thing was that the same firm that owned the franchise permits to McD's, opened a new fast food chain called Metro on 1st of November to the same places where McD's used to operate.
Burgers looks absolutely the same than before but they have different names and they are made of local ingredients. I haven't tried it yet, but I have heard that the prices are cheaper and the taste is better. I think it was a good thing to the economy of Iceland because now there is going to be more demand for local meat and vegetables.
