I arrived to Keflavik airport on 28th of Aug. I had still a little hangover from previous night and I took a bus to the main bus station (BSI). From there I asked direction to Hotel Floki where I was supposed to stay for next four months. I shared four first nights one room with four other students because our contracts started at 1st of Sep. In my new room there was already Kasper and Nina from Denmark. Later that evening we went out to meet other exchange students. Nina went to Icelandic language course one month before so she knew already some exchange students. We ended up to one private university party and there was nice live music, very cheap beer and free BBQ-food. It was Friday night and Reykjavik´s night life gave me a very good impression.
Next morning we went to one free hot tub which was located next to the ocean. That felt sooooo good! Later that day came Jiri (Czech) to our room so we were totally four of us. On Saturday we also went out and realized that locals come to bars very late. We had our welcome meeting on Monday and the whole week went arranging things and stuff. I moved to my own room on 1st of Sep and now I have very nice room with three beds, sink and everything I need. On Wednesday we had our first "official" party arranged by student organization ESN. There was free beer from 8 till 10pm and you can just imagine how it went. When I got home, I went to the toilet and accidently locked myself out. I was standing there, outside of my room with only my underwear on. That was not funny. Reception was closed but luckily there was an extra bed in our corridor and I found some blankets from the basement. Next morning the owner of the house opened my door and said:"you funny Finnish guy".
First week went very fast. We made dinner together, watched movies, went out and had some fun. There are very good opportunities to do sports. There is a gym in our campus, swimming pool with roof top hot tubs across the streets and nice running routes around the city. I also met one local guy and he will ask if I can join to he's football club. Now I have my own Kenitala (personal id number) and it wasn´t so easy to get. Kenitala is very important because you have to use it for example when you pay bills and sign up for courses. First you have to go to the national registry, fill out some papers and then they fax them to your university. Then you have to wait three working days, fill out some more papers and then you have your Kenitala if you are lucky. To get your university e-mail address and access to Ucla (intranet) you have to wait another three working days and then you have to go again to university to get it.
Last Saturday (5th of Sep.) I went with Kasper, Nina and Vanessa (all from Denmark) to hiking trip and I will put some photos from that trip when we change our photos. Marko and Otto are coming today and they will stay around ten days (actually I´m not sure hong long they are going to stay…). I´m sure that boys will love Iceland!!!
