Day 108: 18/4/13
Today I had the four hours work until half 12. It was in a Catholic school. There were lots of religious corners around the school and they said a prayer I the morning and stuff, which was nice to see.
I was just covering for teachers while they had a meeting about special needs or something. First I was with year 5/6. The teacher had maths work for them to do so it was grand. Then I was with year 1/2 who were doing reading groups and all working away quietly for the half hour I was there! I had year 3/4 then for about 40 minutes before break time. The teacher had them doing free writing and wanted them to continue it until break so they did very little! The power went while I was with them and the door of the classroom was opening and closing and that drove them a bit hyper, imagining that there was a ghost or something! After break I was with another 3/4 class and they were supposed to be doing a literacy group, but most were doing very little. Both of the the 3/4 classes would be tough enough if you had a full day with them, but then again if either teacher had left proper work they might have been alright!
I had missed a call from the agency while I was in class so I rang them back and they wanted me to do three days of teacher release next week- Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That's perfect as Ill know where I'm going those mornings and next week was supposed to be another quiet one with Anzac Day on the Thursday. So at least I have three days anyway. Two of the days aren't full days- one is a half hour shorter, the other is an hour shorter so I don't know how that works with pay. But anyway, even if I was paid for a half day it's better than nothing!
It took ages to get back to the hostel as the train ride to the school takes over an hour. I wouldn't make that school in the morning unless they rang me the day before really. So I don't know if that would work. It's a pity as the staff were really friendly and they all introduced themselves to me and asked who I was filling in for and stuff.
On the train on the way home there was a man in the seat across from me that spoke to himself for the whole journey. He wasn't speaking out loud but his mouth was moving like he was having a full conversation. He was looking across from him like he was speaking to someone in that seat and was reaching out to pat them on the knee and pointing his finger at them and stuff. There was noone opposite him, but he obviously thought there was. It was very strange- I was wondering were there some spirits around or something!!
The German girl Kathrin in the room had booked the cinema in the hostel for a few hours this evening. So a group of us watched Get him to the Greek, which was funny enough. As it was Thursday we went down to the bar for a little while to get the free cheese! Someone else had the cinema booked after that so we went to see what they were watching and it was an English girl watching an English tv series called The Mighty Boosh. I watched one episode and couldn't watch any more. It was terrible!! Not funny at all!
