Yesterday we left Lawn Hill and headed to Mount Isa. It's about a 4 hour drive with the roads pretty much 50% dirt and 50% tar. Interesting little town. It's a mining town that also has a rodeo tradition - so lots of miners, a few cowboys, lots of utes/4WD, 4 or 5 steakhouse/bar and grills, alot of unit blocks and dongas. They do try to accomodate the tourists as best as they can however essentially you are staying in an active mining town (a nice change from historic mine towns). As you drive into town the mines aren't hard to miss as they are built along the highway. Pretty much the mines are on one side of the road and the town is on the other. We had a look around the city centre - the city centre is spread out with little shops and roads and small car spaces everywhere. We located a coles, grabbed some groceries and headed back to the caravan park. We also found Rodeo Drive - not quite beverly hill designer botique rodeo drive more a pub, 4wd shop, plaques of well know people on the footpath version. At sunset we went up to the town lookout and watched the sunset over the mines. We then had dinner at the Ethiopian Cafe (similar style of food to indian - the food was great). We stopped back at the lookout on the way back from dinner. Another moonrise that glowed orange. Today we went and picked up some things for the car/camper before having a look around the town. We went past a tent house which were apparently common housing when the mines were being first established. We saw the Tram Cafe which is a melbourne tram now used as seating for a coffee shop. We went to Moondarra Lake which is about 20km north west of town - it's a fishing/water skiing/picnic area. Quite pretty. The rest of the day was spent relaxing afternoon at camp. Next stop: Diamantina National Park
