Josh and I have spent the past three days at Takarakka Bush Resort. Camping at Carnarvon Gorge itself is only available in Qld school holidays however Takarakka is only a 4km drive. Carnarvon Gorge has white sandstone cliffs that change colour with the sun - Carnarvon Creek runs through the gorge that is filled with palms, ferns and shrubs - spectacular. We arrived around 12pm on Monday. That afternoon we went down to the gorge and did the nature trail walk - quite pretty. We also did the walk to the rock pool (you can swim here) and balloon cave (a little cave with some aboriginal art). Just before sunset we walked to the lookout at the caravan park that looks towards the gorge and then went to platypus pool - no platypus however a few kanagroos and wallabies. On Tuesday we went to the gorge early (nights are cooler but days still reach around 25/26 degrees) to complete the 14km loop walk. This walks lead us to some amazing sites: Moss Garden - an vibrant green moss covers the sandstone rock, there is a waterfall and a little rock pool. The Ampitheatre - you enter through a little archway into what can only be described as sandstone room. Wards Canyon - a canyon area featuring the aljon waterfall, little creek, beautiful coloured rocks (reds were amazing). The Art Gallery - an Aboriginal art site. Was the best we have seen this trip as it had alot of different paintings and carvings (apparently the most carvings of the female anatomy from any other artsite in Australia- you have to wonder what was going on at that site back in the day - we speculated). It was a great walk, even though it featured alot of steps (some steep), ladders and numerous stepping stone crossings (not a fan - Josh spent a little bit of time traversing back to help). It took us nearly 5 hours to complete. The remainder of the afternoon was spent relaxing (well earnt) back at Takarakka. Today we did the Mickey Creek Gorge walk which also has a track to the Warrumbah Gorge. Both gorges were pretty - little creeks with moss green sandstone rocks, ferns, palms and little waterfalls. Takarakka also has a creek walk which is also nice and we did that this afternoon and we also went back to the lookout at Takarakka to take some pictures at Sunset. Carnarvon is definately a beautiful part of the world. An oasis in the outback. Next stop: Toowoomba (not entirely happy about being southbound)
