One of the big tourist attractions when visiting Queensland is Fraser Island. We had heard about it from several different people and read lots of things in our books so we had an understanding of what its all about. Fraser Island is a world heritage listed attraction so we knew it was pretty special. I won't bore you with all the facts about it but its basically an island made from sand which can only be driven on by 4WD. There was plenty of travel agents offering so many different packages here, the most popular for backpackers is to group together and hire a four wheel drive. This would involve staying on the island a couple of days and camping. Well me being me I wasn't too interested in camping as Fraser holds a lot of deadly spiders and snakes. Lee was also unsure about driving as we had heard that any little bumps on the cars and we would be paying for it. So we opted for day trip which travelled to various sites on the island in a 4WD minibus. We were taken over from Hervey Bay by ferry which took around an hour. Once on the island our bus was waiting on the sand with our enthusiastic guide, Henning. We instantly loved him as he was very energetic and full of jokes. He warned us from the off that driving on Fraser was "as rough as guts'' so we were prepared. He was right as well, to get across the island we had to drive through some very bumpy roads, good job we had seatbelts. Once across to the other side we were driving down the open beach which they class as a main road. It was pretty amazing to be driving along the sand like this, it was definately the highlight of the day for me. Our tour took us firstly for a walk in the rainforest, a stop to cool off at Elli Creek, a visit to a shipwreck on the beach, a massive sanddune and a lovely peaceful lake. We think we saw the main sights and attractions that makes Fraser so special as well as having our lunch lovingly prepared by Henning! We were lucky enough to sit in the front seat all the way back which gave me and lee a whole new perspective on the driving and was alot of fun. The island was really beautiful and well preserved, unlike anything we had seen before so we are glad we got the chance to experience it.
