The first morning I got up at sunrise and made my way to the harbour for half a days whale watching, Lynz didn't fancy it, I think the word sunrise put her off! The boat ride lasted for about an hour or so before we spotted the first whale, a mother and calve having a early morning feed. One thing that really amazes me is the size of the whales - absolutely huge and I wasn't disappointed. The mother was about 14m long and even though she never jumped out of the water (well its not a circus!) you could see just how big she was. I've seen whales on TV but it is nothing like seeing one only a few metres away in the flesh. They would pop up to say hello and blow water through their blow hole then nose dive down throwing their tail in the air giving you a perfect photo opportunity. Its hard to describe with words and pictures, so if you have ever been or ever go whale watching you will know exactly what I mean. Surreal is a good word to sum it up.
We spent a few days at Hervey bay, our campsite was right on the beach so we spent alot of our time on the beach sun bathing and enjoying the gorgeous Queensland weather and on the evenings went out for a few meals and found a nice cheap pub (just like the Plimmy!) and had a more than a few drinks.
A lovely small town that is well worth a visit, but probably just for the main tourist attractions...Whales and the sandy Fraser Island (see Fraser Island entry).
