We were in Europe last October and had a great time, but I wasn't expecting to be heading back to Europe so soon. Scott has to travel to the Krakow, Poland office for training for a week and I'm going to tag along. Dates are still up in the air, but it looks like the end of February. We will most likely fly from Cincinnati to Chicago, Chicago to Munich, Germany and Munich to Krakow. Time difference is the same as Paris - 6 hours ahead of Cincinnati. I'm fairly certain that we are staying at the Hotel Galaxy because it is the only hotel near the office.
This trip will be different for me because Scott will be working most of the time and I'll be checking out the city by myself for the most part. Scary! I've looked into the Polish language and it is intimidating to say the least, but it appears that English is spoken a good bit there too.
Weather in Krakow is similar to February weather in Cincinnati, though I think they have more snow and it's slightly colder. We get to take actual suitcases on this trip (no backpacks!) so that will allow me to bring more layers than our first Europe trip.
Here are some interesting things to know about Krakow:
- It's old! The first documented references to Krakow are from the year 965.
- Money - Poland is not in the Euro zone, so it has it's own currency called the Zloty. One zloty is equal to $.28 US. Zloty's are also broken down into coins called grosz.
- Meals - There are three main meals in Poland - sniadanie (breakfast), obiad (dinner - usually 2 courses), and kolacja (supper).
- Krakow is about 40 miles from Auschwitz.
- Population is around 760,000.
- Poland is a medieval city with several cathedrals, monasteries, and tons of gothic architecture.
I'll add some more facts and places to visit as I do some further research.
