On route to Udaipur we stopped at a Jain temple. Heather was initially refused entry for showing too much leg and had to borrow some fetching blue hospital issue trousers. The temple is a calm and peaceful place and each colums design is totally unique. We took lots of pictures inside but were told off for photographing the Jain statue as photos are prohibited.
Late afternoon we arrived at Udaipur and our hotel overlooked the Pichola Lake with the majestic Lake Palace Hotel in the background. This also famously featured in a James Bond movie but more on that later. To round off the evening we watched several traditional Rajastani dances which got progrssively more surreal. It started with a guy dressed as a warrior straddling another dressed as a Tiger whilst fighting another warrior. Next was our personal favourite where 3 seated women played various small symbals located on their body. Finally a woman began a dance with a pot balanced on her head and ended with about 10 of them up there. Surreal but fantastic!
The following day we strolled the streets but started at the Jain temple. Here we got to witness a ceremony but again pictures were prohibited of the Jain statue. Following this we visited the City Palace avoiding the tour guides, touts and tourists and even got reduced entry with our student cards and were able to stroll round at our own pace. This palace was not as impressive as previous ones we'd seen however we really enjoyed all the paintings with really dodgy perspective.
After lunch we sat on the lake front with yet another Kingfisher before jumping in a Tuk-tuk and driving over to Dudh Talai for a boat ride around the lake. Felling fully chilled we decided we'd tackle a hike up the hill to watch the sunset . We arrived at the top compeletely shattered but was worth it for the view. Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better we stumbled upon a restaurant that was showing the Bond Film 'Octop**** on the roof top terrace. Scenes from the film were shot around Udaipur and the restaurant is so proud of it they've been showing it every night for the last 16 years. They also do a mean Paneer Pasanda....yummy!
