The guide books say of Bangkok it's a high energy city that loves neon and noise, chaos and concrete, fashion and future; a statement that couldn't better explain this crazy little town. When we arrived in Bangkok it was pretty cray from the word go, we were directed to the sky train from the airport and were promptly whisked into the city centre high above the streets below. When the train came to an end we disembarked straight onto a busy Bangkok street where an over friendly local (who I might add had just been using a road cone as a megaphone) came over to guide us to the nearest bus stop to get us to our hotel. Having spent a month in India, where it's hard to trust anyone, we were a bit skeptical that we'd been sent to find a bus going completely the wrong way or into an expensive part of town. All turned out OK and the nutter in the street was genuinely helping us out, which is how we found most of Bangkok to be. That evening we headed out for a look around town and once again we'd managed to arrive into a country in the middle of a massive celebration. This time it was the King of Thailand's birthday... Always ready to get involved though we headed down to the large central square and milled amongst the partying locals listening to the music and slurping on coconut ice creams.
The following day we decided the mode of transport would be the Chaophyra River Bus. We took the boat first to Wat Pho temple which contains an enormous 46m long, gold, reclining Buddha which barely fits in the building followed by a climb up Wat Arun temple to catch the sunset. That evening we headed to China Town and after a look round we ate at a stall at the side of the road. It also turned out to be the cheapest, tastiest meal we had in Bangkok.
Day 3 in Bangkok was shopping day. The main shopping area around a place called Siam Square is crazy. There are so many shopping centres we got tired of walking them all and each one is connected by large futuristic concrete sky walks taken straight out of a movie. After shopping liquid refreshments of the alcoholic variety were a must and some how we ended up drinking Chang beer at a promo event with some, less than, talented musicians howling out some noise... Just to finish off another crazy day we stopped for a few drinks on our way home in a makeshift bar at the side of the road, sipping cocktails in the middle of the fenced off road...
The final day in Bangkok we spent in the park. To keep costs down we'd bought some pre-made stirfry from a supermarket and had a little picnic in the park. We were pretty shocked as we wandered through to see 2 massive lizards swimming around the streams. We were slightly relieved to learn they weren't crocodiles as we'd first thought because we'd been having a snooze in the park moments earlier. We continued our relaxing day with a Thai massage, well I say relaxing. After being twisted into ridiculous positions we were ready for some more beer and ended the night off with some trance music excellently mixed by a one armed DJ... What a winner!!!
