Early start up at 5am to leave at 6am followed by a 6 hour journey to Mandawa. We checked into a converted Haveli (house) and had a lovely Dal with Chipatis for lunch in its beautiful painted courtyard.
Mandawa is a small town in Rajasthan located on the silk route from China. Many dominant merchants settled here and built their Havelis or family homes. We took a tour to see inside some of them and the architecture geek inside us really came out. The hand carved woodwork and clever use of courtyards and thick walls to provide natural cooling really wet our appetite.
Later on were taken into a silk trader's hop where he explained the techniques and materials used in producing the exquisite sheets, wall hangings and throws found in the area. Obviously also a clever rouse for the hard sell however we decided not to buy anything when he old us a throw made from the hair from a camels neck would cost us 7500 rupees (about 100 pounds)……we fully appreciated the free cup of Chai Tea though!
