Holtyboy's Travel Blog
With our flight to Kuala Lumpur booked for the Sunday evening we took advantage of a spare Saturday night and travelled to London a day early so we could take in a show and be able to get out to Heathrow without too much bother. Having checked in at the Travelodge opposite King Cross station we wandered back past Platform 9 3/4 (of Harry Potter fame) and visited the Parcel Yard pub within Kings Cross station. This was my first visit to this place and what an interesting, quirky, place to enjoy a beer and maybe some food. Lots of little seating areas, probably old office areas and store rooms perched above the station making this a relaxed place to spend time either waiting for a train, or just catching up with friends. The Beavertown 'Smog Rocket' that was sampled (on recommendation) was very good even if it did come in a can! Prior to seeing the fabulous hit musical, Jersey Boys, at the Piccadilly Theatre we had an early dinner at Brasserie Zédel just off Piccadilly Circus. Café/Brasserie Zédel is well worth a visit even if not eating there. From the outside it is like a busy French café, but descending the stairs you arrive at a swanky American Bar, a classy jazz/caberet venue (The Crazy Coqs) and the huge room that houses the bustling brasserie itself. The food was not cheap but it was very rich, very tasty and served by very attentive staff - they were worthy of the 15% service charge added to the bill. Having previously seen Jersey Boys when in Las Vegas earlier this year we enjoyed the London version of the show much better. The music was great, the acting and singing was fabulous and being an old style London theatre you did feel much closer to the story being told on the stage than in a modern theatre housed in a Las Vegas resort hotel. Our Sunday in London will be fairly relaxed with a late breakfast, maybe a few coffee stops and then a late lunch to be had before we head out to London Heathrow. Our Oman Air (WY102) flight to Muscat departs from Terminal 3 at 21.05 so we have plenty of time to fill before catching the underground out to the airport direct from Kings Cross St Pancras tube station. Hopefully we will get a little bit of sleep on the seven and a half hour overnight journey to the Middle East and catch our connecting flight to KL with ease . . . . we will have just one hour and twenty minutes in Muscat airport if all goes to plan!
