Norwich is, if honest, a little isolated. There seems to be no quick way to get to the city either by road or rail and the journey just seems far longer than it really should (some of the scenery en-route is not that inspiring either) however when you do get there what a delightful city it is!
We were met by our good friends Tim, Georgie and Tom at Norwich station at 11.15 (after leaving Derby at 07.53) to go dragon hunting. There are in total 84 GoGoDragons dotted around the city located on city streets, inside buildings and also out at airport and hospital so if you want to see them all - especially in one day - it would take quite a bit of planning.
The GoGoDragons have two real aims; one is to get people out and about visiting different parts of the city and discovering areas that even the locals may not have been to, the second is to raise money for a local charity called Break. You can donate via text/SMS and the dragons themselves will be auctioned off later in the year too to raise money for the charity. There is also a word search quiz that you can complete if you see all of the dragons to win flight tickets with KLM - but some letters are replaced with numbers (there was the odd '3' thrown in for an 'E' or a '1' for an 'I') so it would be difficult to cheat - although I am sure some kind soul may have placed the answer on the internet if you search.
The dragons also have had lots of local input into their design, be it from the schools, companies and other groups. It seems a good way to get people out and about, especially on a gorgeous sunny day like we had, as at nearly every dragon we came to there were other people following the 'dragon map' and taking photographs (the map was however not the easiest to follow and even our local guides were flummoxed at times!).
Norwich really is a good city to visit with plenty of old streets to wander, a castle, a stunning cathedral, quality shopping from the all of the major high street brands as well as lots of local individual shops and what seemed like a pub or coffee shop on every street corner. There is no need to worry about booking a refreshment stop as there are plenty of thirst quenching opportunities to suit all tastes. It would be great to spend a bit more time exploring in the city and of course it makes a good base for visiting the Norfolk coast too.
There was no way we could see all of the dragons, but we did see a lot, so we called it a day and headed back from Norwich on the 16.54 East Midlands Trains service to Nottingham (nicely before the football crowds hit the streets) for the journey back to Nottingham which, with a quick connection, had us back into Derby at 20.07.
It really was a most pleasant day out and if you want to hunt for the GoGoDragons then be in Norwich before the 5th September 2015!
