So this where the 'Crazy Weekend Down Under' really begins! With a morning flight from Manchester it seemed sensible to stop close to the airport ahead of jetting off 'down under' as I would be heading through to the departure at around 0730. The Hilton at Manchester Airport was just a few steps from both the railway station and airport terminal so fitted the bill perfectly. We also had a voucher at Christmas from my uncle and aunt that paid a good slug of the hotel cost too - so it was a bit of a winner all round! (Thank you Robin and Pat!). As Heather had joined me in Manchester it enabled us to have a nice evening meal in Wilmslow (a short train journey from the airport) and she was there to wave me off through security as I started my trip to the southern hemisphere. Hopefully I will make it back to her in one piece in a few days time and whilst she will sadly miss out seeing friends in Australia she will certainly not miss the two days spent in the air at 36,000 feet. So after getting my Australian Visa at the airport it is almost time to board the flight at Manchester with Etihad Airways (flight EY16) departing at 0910 that will take me to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (a new airport for my list) where I will, with a following wind, arrive at 1930 local time (UK +3 hours). After a couple of hours in Abu Dhabi I should then be boarding my next flight to Melbourne, Australia with EY460 scheduled to depart at 2145 arriving at 1720 local time (UK +9 hours) on Friday afternoon. There is no denying it but it is bloody long way to Australia! Hopefully I will get some sleep on the overnight flight and arrive into Melbourne bright eyed and bushy tailed . . . . . or then again I might be calling for the ProPlus or Red Bull to keep me going all weekend. Why did I think this would be a good idea for a weekend break? Laraine Brave boy Holty hope all goes well and you reach your target ,❤
Sweeney Todd. I still think your mad, but then that's us British for you. Enjoy the Run, I shall look out for your results on the national news.
Julie Beck-Richards We hope to see a similar image very soon when you return - OK Heather may look fresh and you may look a bit 'jaded' but you will be full of what you have achieved. Have a brilliant time, take care and above all, remember why you are doing this crazy thing.
Andy Holt G'day, it has been a great weekend away and so far no jet lag effects! Fabulous experience and very pleased to have done this. My dad would be proud.
Andy Holt It has been a great weekend away and pretty much non stop. Really enjoyed it and more than doubled my initial money target and ran the race at a reasonable pace for me too . . . . the winner however did it in 42 minutes about twice as quick as me and faster than the train. I was pleased not being picked up by the 'tail end Charlie' bus and kept moving forward through the crowd rather than backwards.
