Holtyboy's Travel Blog
Being me, travelling directly (or at least as directly as possible) to Worcester was not really an option so my outbound journey saw me travel to Oxford and then after a 40 minute wait I travelled on the First Great Western service to Worcester Foregate Street via the 'Cotswold Line'. This railway runs from Oxford to Worcester via Moreton-in-Marsh and Evesham and it is a pleasant journey to make. Arriving in Worcester I first visited Greyfriars, a National Trust property, located on Friar Street right in the heart of the old medieval city. The house originally dates from 1480. The National Trust also own the buildings opposite as the last owners of Greyfriars had the money to buy them rather than see them destroyed after the war - the buildings had been under a demolition order. Friar Street is worth a visit even if you don't pop into Greyfriars (they also have a little tea room on site overlooking the garden if you don't want to go into the actual building). Next up was Worcester Cathedral, now I am not religous in anyway but I do like looking at these magnificent buildings. With cloisters set around at attractive rear square the cathedral is worthy of a visit - again they also have a tea room on site! Walking along the main shopping street I was able to call into the Guildhall, another fairly iconic building within the city centre. This building is still used for various council meetings but was being set up ready for a twinning event with a Chinese city. It was nice to be able to pop in and have a look at this place. With all the usual high street chains of shops and food offerings there also seemed to be a good number of independent retail opportunities as well the chance to follow the Elgar Trail, walk along the River Severn or you can spend time finding out about the famous Worcester porcelain. There is plenty to do in and around the city. So a weekend in 'Wonderful Worcester' would be well worth considering and maybe combine that with a trip out into the nearby Malvern Hills or indeed the Cotswolds as it is all easily do-able.
